A Different Kind of Singlespeed......

With the kiddos back in town, and bikes flying out the door, we have gotten a heck of a lot of inquiries about fixed and singlespeed commuters...The interest has caused us to think about expanding our niche to include some Surly Steamrollers and Redline 9-2-5 bikes. Personally, I ride a Steamroller on the days I choose to commute. Being a middle school teacher means that my days start wicked early...often times too early to safely commute in the dark between "da Hill" and "Durham". That said, I am a fan the steamroller. It was pointed out to me recently that the Redline 9-2-5 is not only less expensive than the Steamroller, but also comes better equipped.....check out them fenders, baby! So I'm gonna throw it out there...You decide. Either way you can't go wrong, especially if you're intrigued by the fixed gear thang, as both bikes come with a flip flop rear hub...

MSRP of Surly Steamroller: $665
MSRP of Redline 9-2-5: $499

I've been riding the 9*2*5 for a couple of years now and I can't say enough good things about it. There's nothing particularly fancy about it, but everything on it is solid: just what you'd want in a commuter. I rode my for nearly a year and a half before I had to replace a single part -- pretty amazing considering how many miles I put on it.

I had a previous model with mustache handlebars and a basic gray paintjob, but I think the bullhorns are a better fit for the frame, and the panels look great. Oh, and fenders are a must-have for commuters!
